If ACT Credit Management has contacted you, start by checking what debt they are collecting, who the original creditor is, and whether the amount is correct. A real debt collector can ask for payment and pass information back to a creditor, but they are not bailiffs and cannot take goods without the correct legal process.

This guide explains who ACT Credit Management are, what they can and cannot do, how to respond to letters or calls, and when a wider debt solution such as an IVA may be worth checking.

Quick answer
#

ACT Credit Management Limited is listed at Companies House as an active UK company involved in collection agency activity. ACT Credit Management’s own terms state that it is a member of the Credit Services Association.

If they contact you, the safest first step is to verify the debt in writing. Ask for the original creditor, the account reference, the balance, and evidence that ACT has authority to collect. Do not agree to a payment you cannot afford just because a letter or call feels urgent.

ACT Credit Management quick decision guide
#

  • You do not recognise the debt: ask for written proof before making any payment.
  • The debt is yours but unaffordable: work out a realistic budget before agreeing to a plan.
  • ACT mentions court action: respond quickly if you receive a Letter Before Claim or official court form.
  • Several collectors are contacting you: compare IVA, DMP, DRO, and other options before paying one account first.
  • Calls feel pressuring: ask to be contacted in writing and keep a record of every contact.

Who are ACT Credit Management?
#

ACT Credit Management Limited is a UK company registered under company number 05073492. Companies House lists the company as active and gives its nature of business as activities of collection agencies.

CSA membership is relevant because member firms are expected to follow industry standards, but it does not prove that a particular debt is valid or that the amount being chased is correct.

Treat the company and the debt as two separate questions:

  • Is the company real? Public records indicate that ACT Credit Management Limited is a real registered company.
  • Is the debt valid? That still needs checking against your own records and the evidence ACT provides.

What ACT Credit Management can do
#

ACT Credit Management can contact you about a debt, ask you to pay, request information about your circumstances, and discuss a payment arrangement. They may do this by letter, phone, email, or text depending on the details they hold.

They can also tell the creditor they are acting for whether you have responded, disputed the debt, offered payment, or failed to engage.

If the debt is regulated consumer credit, relevant FCA rules require firms to treat customers in default or arrears fairly. That includes considering financial difficulty, vulnerability, disputes, and reasonable repayment proposals.

What ACT Credit Management cannot do
#

ACT Credit Management are debt collectors, not enforcement agents.

They cannot:

  • force entry into your home
  • take your belongings
  • pretend they are bailiffs
  • threaten powers they do not have
  • discuss your debt with neighbours, family, or your employer without permission
  • pressure you into a payment you cannot afford

If a collector threatens bailiff action before the correct legal process has happened, ask them to put their position in writing and get debt advice before responding.

What to do if ACT Credit Management calls you
#

If ACT calls, stay calm and avoid giving payment details immediately. Ask for:

  • the caller’s name
  • the company name
  • the reference number
  • the original creditor
  • the amount they say is owed
  • where they will send written proof

You do not have to resolve everything on the call. If you feel anxious, say that you want communication in writing and end the call. Then compare the letter against your own records, bank statements, credit file, and any old creditor correspondence.

What to do if you do not recognise the debt
#

If you do not recognise the debt, do not make a token payment just to stop contact. A payment may be treated as acknowledgement of the debt.

Write to ACT Credit Management and ask them to provide:

  • the original creditor’s name
  • the original account number or agreement reference
  • a breakdown of the balance
  • a copy of the credit agreement or evidence for the debt, where relevant
  • confirmation of whether they own the debt or collect on behalf of another creditor

While a genuine dispute is being checked, a collector should not simply ignore the dispute and continue demanding payment without clear justification.

What if the ACT debt is old?
#

Some older debts may be statute-barred in England and Wales, or prescribed in Scotland. That depends on the type of debt, where you live, when you last paid, whether you acknowledged the debt in writing, and whether court action has already started.

Do not assume a debt is unenforceable just because it is old. Also do not restart contact with a payment until you understand the limitation position.

If you think the debt is old, ask for the account history and get advice before admitting liability.

What if you cannot afford to pay ACT Credit Management?
#

If the debt is yours but unaffordable, do not agree to the first figure requested. Work out what you can afford after priority costs such as rent, council tax, energy, food, travel, and essential household bills.

Your options may include:

  • an affordable payment plan
  • a temporary hold while you get debt advice
  • a full and final settlement, if you have access to a lump sum
  • a Debt Management Plan
  • Breathing Space if you need short-term protection in England or Wales
  • an IVA if several unsecured debts are unaffordable
  • a Debt Relief Order or bankruptcy in some cases

The right route depends on your full debt picture, not just the ACT account.

Can an IVA stop ACT Credit Management contact?
#

An IVA can stop direct contact from collectors where the debt is included and the IVA is approved. Your insolvency practitioner becomes the point of contact for included creditors.

An IVA is not suitable for every debt problem. It is usually considered when you have unaffordable unsecured debts, more than one creditor, regular income, and enough spare income to make a sustainable monthly payment. See the full IVA criteria before deciding.

If ACT is one of several collectors contacting you, it is worth checking whether a wider solution would be more stable than trying to negotiate with each collector separately.

Can ACT Credit Management take you to court?
#

Court action is possible if the debt is valid, enforceable, and not resolved. The route depends on the type of debt and whether ACT owns the account or is acting for another creditor.

Important documents include:

  • a formal Letter Before Claim or Letter Before Action
  • a County Court claim form in England and Wales
  • court paperwork in Scotland or Northern Ireland, if relevant

Do not ignore official court forms. If you receive one, check the deadline and respond. Ignoring a claim may lead to a CCJ or equivalent court order.

Can ACT Credit Management send someone to your home?
#

Some debt collectors use field agents. A field agent is not a bailiff. They can knock and ask to talk, but you do not have to let them in and they cannot take goods.

If someone visits:

  • ask for ID
  • speak through the door if you prefer
  • do not let them in if you feel uncomfortable
  • say you want contact in writing
  • make a note of the time, date, and what was said

If the visit relates to a court order or enforcement notice, the position may be different. Check the document carefully and get advice.

How to complain about ACT Credit Management
#

Complain in writing if you believe ACT has:

  • chased the wrong person
  • refused to explain the debt
  • ignored a genuine dispute
  • used misleading threats
  • contacted you excessively
  • disclosed your debt to someone else
  • failed to consider vulnerability or financial difficulty

Give dates, reference numbers, and copies of letters or screenshots. If the complaint is not resolved, you may be able to escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service or another relevant body depending on the debt type.

Frequently asked questions
#

Is ACT Credit Management a real company?
#

Yes. Companies House lists ACT Credit Management Limited as an active UK company, company number 05073492. ACT Credit Management’s own terms also state that it is a member of the Credit Services Association.

Do I have to speak to ACT Credit Management on the phone?
#

No. You can ask for communication in writing, especially if calls feel stressful or you need time to check the debt.

Should I pay ACT Credit Management straight away?
#

Only pay once you understand what the debt is, who owns it, whether the amount is correct, and whether the payment is affordable. If you do not recognise the debt, ask for proof first.

Can ACT Credit Management affect my credit score?
#

The original debt, default, or court action may affect your credit file. ACT’s contact alone does not create a new debt, but ignoring a valid debt can lead to further credit file damage.

Can I include ACT Credit Management in an IVA?
#

Possibly, if the ACT balance is an unsecured debt and an IVA is suitable for your full situation. Use the IVA calculator to check broad eligibility before making payment promises you cannot keep.
