Debt collector numbers can be confusing because firms may use diallers, text systems and regional call centres. Scammers can also copy a real company name.

How to use this lookup safely
#

If the number matches a guide, still check the letter reference, original creditor and amount before paying. If it does not match, do not assume it is safe or unsafe from the number alone.

If you do not recognise the debt, ask for written proof. If calls are causing stress, you can ask for writing-only contact.

What to do before calling back
#

Look up the company name independently. Do not use only a link in a text. If the debt is said to be HMRC, DVLA, council tax or a court debt, verify through the official account, council or court route where possible.

Do not give card or bank details on an inbound call unless you have independently confirmed who you are speaking to.
